Quick, Simple Ethiopian Influenced Beans Dish

Today’s Cooking & Eating Adventure

I made a quick bean dish inspired by the traditional Ethiopian dish “Ful.” Ful is typically made with fava beans, but over time, I’ve discovered that you can use a variety of beans to create equally flavorful and satisfying dishes by applying the same techniques, spices, and ingredients that are characteristic of Ful.

The key to making a rich bean dish lies in the preparation method, where beans are cooked and mashed. Then mixed with a blend of aromatic spices (Berbere), cumin, garlic, olive oil, onions, jalapeños, and tomatoes. Whether you’re using fava beans or another type, this approach offers versatility while still maintaining the essence of Ful’s bold, savory flavors.

How I made it. giving the dish a comforting and hearty quality

I’ve tried many different brands of Berbere. Most are spicy hot. The one I now use is “The Spice Way Berbere Seasoning. ” It has lots of flavor without the intense heat.

I plated Ful with rice, pita bread, cucumbers, and sweet peppers to make it a balanced meal. See two pics to the right, bottom row.
